The Elixir of Antwerp was created in 1863 by François-Xavier de Beukelaer, an Antwerp pharmacist. He developed the recipe by mixing herbs, roots and spices with cognac and sugar. The product was an immediate success, not least because of its medicinal properties. Over time, the recipe was refined and evolved into a popular tasting product.
The distillery went through several difficult periods, notably during the two world wars and the economic crisis of the 1930s. However, it has survived and continues to produce the Antwerp Elixir as well as other quality liqueurs and spirits. Today, the distillery is run by the fifth generation of the de Beukelaer family and employs about 30 people.
The distillery is recognised as a historical monument, is open to visitors and offers tastings. The distillery is also committed to sustainable production, notably by using organic ingredients and recycling its waste.
The Elixir of Antwerp is an emblematic Belgian drink. With its unique taste and its 160 year old traditional recipe.
This liqueur is translucent, which is rare when double distilled. It stood out from other liqueurs at the time, because the use of the port of Antwerp allowed the distillery to import exotic plants. Amongst the many medals it received, we can note that it received a prize from Louis Pasteur himself. The distillery also produces a drink called Elixir de Spa, a beverage whose age-old recipe was particularly appreciated in the royal courts of the time, and especially by the Queen of Belgium.
