The Fryns distillery was founded in 1887 by William Fryns in Hasselt. He gave the distillery the clover emblem, which is still their symbol today. His sons, Guillaume jr. and Jules, succeeded him in 1908 and brought a breath of fresh air to the distillery. Driven by the desire to increase the growth of the distillery, they added a malt house and an ice factory. They even went so far as to open branches in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Mons.
The liqueurs were very popular during these years, as they were products that attracted a lot of attention because of their original and classy appearance. The Second World War marked a break in the activities of the distillery. The sons refused to collaborate with the enemy, so they had to rebuild after the war. The third generation succeeded and continued the expansion of the distillery, while keeping the spirit of tradition dear to the family.
As innovators, they were the first to launch pre-mixed cocktails, also called long drinks, on the market. Bruggeman took over the family business in 1979. After 53 years in the same building, the distillery was moved to a new location of 6500 square metres on the Hasselt ring. In 1995, the company moved to Ghent.
Since 2018, the Fryns distillery has been taken over by a fourth generation family member: Michel Fryns. Based in Hasselt, he intends to bring a wave of renewal to the company and bring authentic Belgian genever back into fashion. Joined in 2021 by Céleste Fryns, the first female member of the family, the distillery is in good hands to regain its former glory.
